10 Things I Wish I Knew Before I Became a Mother

Before I had a baby, I couldn't fathom exactly how my life would be. I went out with friends, I worked long hours and I loved having uninterrupted sleep.

I always desired to have a family and I can tell you first hand, nothing can ever prepare you for parenthood. I remember taking prenatal classes and thinking this is going to be a cake walk! Then baby came and I realized I could only survive with coffee, I could not use the restroom alone and I would not be able to leave my child without feeling extremely guilty.

1) The love for your baby may not be instant at birth. I remember laying in the hospital with this gorgeous little girl I always dreamed about and I loved her, but I wasn't crazy about her. It's okay if you don't feel a bond immediately, you just met this little person!

2) No matter what kind of parenting classes you take, nothing will prepare you. Nothing.

3) Many times like during your pregnancy, you will cry about anything. One night I was crying over the fact that my baby was turning 6 months. I thought she was growing up too fast, now look, she will be 2 in June!

4) You sweat A  LOT after having a baby! I was probably losing weight just by sweating so much.

5) You can and will be eating dinner, have to change a nasty diaper and then go back to eating as normal.

6) Your child will pee on your sheets and you will be so sleep deprived that you'll leave those exact sheets on..for days..

7) Your baby will poop in the tub.

8) You will feel so guilty for mistakes you make in parenting.

9) Leaving your child will feel like the end of the world. When I leave my daughter for work, I miss her so much! And she seems to become even more beautiful while I’m gone!

10) Keep the main thing the main thing. Many mothers believe in breastfeeding, or they believe in formula-feeding. They’re strong co-sleeping proponents, or they’re adamant co-sleeping opponents. They think pacifiers are God’s gift to parents, or they think they’re the devil’s tool. Decide what is best for you and stick to that : )
